Reddit’s Influence on ChatGPT and AI Overviews - How Influential is Reddit in 2026?
Why Reddit threads end up inside AI answers, what changed in August and September 2026 and how to earn a place in the threads that get cited. Every figure was checked on October 8, 2026.
Yes.
Reddit threads shape what ChatGPT and Google's AI features say about your category and often about your brand.
Ask an AI assistant which wallet, exchange or launchpad to trust, and part of the answer is usually built from people arguing about it on Reddit.
Have you seen a Reddit thread show up in an AI answer to a buying question? Most crypto teams have. Usually it's a thread they never knew existed.
The short version:
Reddit is a top source. In Ahrefs data for July 2026, it was the most-cited domain in ChatGPT and Google AI Mode.
It's volatile. ChatGPT's Reddit citations fell 86% in August 2026, after a change in how ChatGPT searches.
Google still leans on it. AI Overviews and AI Mode dropped far less over the same weeks.
Reddit is closing doors. Its free API stops taking new requests on October 31, 2026, and RSS feeds end on November 13.
You can't fake your way in. Cited threads reward real answers, and Reddit punishes fake ones.
Start with an audit. Find the threads AI already cites for your buying questions, then decide where to join.
Evidence Summary: How Often AI Engines Cite Reddit
Every major study puts Reddit at or near the top of AI citations, but its share depends on the engine and the week. Here's what the data says, newest first.
In 680 million citations, Reddit held 46.7% of Perplexity's top-10 source share and 21% of AI Overviews'
Reddit's share of top-cited sources in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews and Perplexity
What the numbers mean:
Each engine has its own appetite. Perplexity and Google's AI features lean on discussion. ChatGPT leans more on reference sites: Wikipedia held 47.9% of its top-10 source share in Profound's data.
The studies count differently. Some measure all citations, others only the top sources, so compare direction, not decimals.
Week-to-week swings are real. 1 retrieval change can cut an engine's use of Reddit by more than half.
The pattern holds anyway. When people ask which product to pick, AI engines go looking for people who've used it.
Why Do AI Engines Cite Reddit So Often?
AI engines cite Reddit because it ranks in Google, it's licensed to the 2 biggest AI companies and it's full of first-hand answers to buying questions.
It's licensed to Google. A deal worth about $60M a year, signed in February 2024, lets Google train on Reddit posts and surface them more prominently in its products.
And to OpenAI. A May 2024 partnership lets OpenAI display Reddit content in ChatGPT.
It ranks. In an AEO vendor's study of 1.21 million citations, 62% of cited Reddit threads ranked on Google's first page for a related query. AI engines often search first and cite second.
Its titles read like prompts. "Best wallet for staking?" and "Is this exchange safe?" are the questions buyers type into ChatGPT.
It's first-hand. Comments say "I've used it for 2 years" or "withdrawals took 3 days". That's the evidence an AI wants before it recommends anything.
The value sits in the comments. 58% of the Reddit citations in the same study pointed to a comment, not the original post.
3 routes a Reddit thread takes into AI answers: Google, OpenAI and everyone else
It set a trap to prove it. A test post visible only to Google's crawler showed up in Perplexity's results within hours, Reddit says.
Free access ends in stages from October 31, 2026, when Reddit's public API stops taking new requests.
Which Reddit Threads Get Cited?
The threads that get cited rank in Google, answer a buying question and hold 1 specific, upvoted comment. They're rarely the viral ones. The same 1.21 million-citation study, run on recommendation prompts in early 2026, found:
Rank beats karma. 62% of cited threads sat on Google's first page for a related query.
Modest votes are enough. The median cited comment had 38 upvotes. Only 7% of cited threads passed 1,000.
Niche beats huge. 71% of cited threads came from subreddits with fewer than 500,000 members.
Engines differ on age. The median cited thread was about 3.5 months old on Perplexity and about 16 months old on ChatGPT.
Comments carry it. 58% of citations linked straight to a comment.
Anatomy of a Reddit thread that AI engines cite, with the comment that gets quoted
What that means for a crypto team:
Old threads still count. A 2024 "best hardware wallet" thread can still feed ChatGPT today.
Small subreddits matter. A niche wallet or DeFi community can outweigh the biggest crypto forums.
1 detailed comment beats 50 short ones.
Don't guess which threads matter. Run the prompts and see which threads come back.
The study comes from an AEO software vendor and covers English recommendation prompts in a single quarter. Treat it as direction, not law.
How Do Brand Mentions on Reddit Show Up in AI Answers?
Your name in a cited thread becomes part of the answer, in the words the commenters used. If the thread says you're the cheapest, the AI may repeat it. If it says withdrawals stall, that travels too.
Mentions beat links. In Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, against 0.218 for backlinks.
The context sticks to your name. "Best for staking", "high fees" and "support never replied" all ride along with the mention.
Comparisons do the heavy lifting. "X vs Y" threads feed the "which should I pick" prompts directly.
Silence reads as absence. If your team never shows up in your category's threads, the AI builds its answer from competitors and critics.
Complaints can be answered. A specific, public reply from an official account is the kind of comment that gets upvoted and quoted.
What to listen for first:
Your brand plus "scam", "legit", "withdrawal", "fees" and "vs".
Competitors named in "best" threads where you're missing.
Buying questions nobody has answered well yet.

What Happened to Reddit Citations in August and September 2026?
2 separate things happened: ChatGPT changed how it searches, and Reddit started closing free access to its data. Neither took Reddit out of AI answers. Both changed where it shows up.
August: ChatGPT Stopped Leaning on Reddit
On August 8, ChatGPT Search changed. Searches limited to specific sites jumped from 0.37% to 16.8% of its background queries in a day, Forbes reported from Promptwatch data.
Reddit fell 86%. Its share of ChatGPT citations dropped from 3.8% (July 18 to August 7) to 0.5% (August 14 to 17), per Semrush.
The ChatGPT app fell hardest.Elmo measured Reddit at 4.67% of citations before and 0.38% after.
Google moved far less. Over the same weeks, Reddit's share fell 11% in AI Overviews and 31% in AI Mode.
OpenAI's position: it doesn't set a fixed visibility level for any site, and ChatGPT still cites Reddit.
Reddit's position: it doesn't rely on AI assistants for traffic.
Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations fell from 3.8% to 0.5% in August 2026
September: Reddit Closed the Free Door
On September 30, Reddit announced the end of free data access. New public API requests stop on October 31, 2026, RSS feeds end on November 13 and the rest of the public API closes in March 2027, TechRepublic reported.
Its stated reason: RSS had become a route for large-scale scraping and automated abuse.
Licensed partners sit on a separate track. Google and OpenAI get Reddit data under their own deals.
The effect: unpaid AI tools lose an easy way to read Reddit, while licensed partners keep theirs.
It Has Happened Before
September 2025 looked similar. ChatGPT's Reddit citations fell from about 60% of responses to about 10% in 6 weeks.
The likely cause then was Google. Analyst Kevin Indig linked it to Google removing a setting that let data tools pull 100 results at once. 57.8% of Reddit's keywords rank outside the top 20.
What it means for your plan:
Don't build on 1 engine. A thread can vanish from ChatGPT and stay in AI Overviews.
Watch the licensed engines. Reddit content will flow most reliably through Google and OpenAI.
The work doesn't change. Threads that rank and answer real questions keep their value wherever AI reads them.
How to Audit the Reddit Threads AI Cites: The Citation Trail
The Citation Trail is our 4-step audit: list the prompts, find the threads, add useful replies and recheck every month. It starts from the AI answer and walks back to the threads behind it.
The Citation Trail: AP Collective's 4-step audit of Reddit threads cited in AI answers
Prompts. Write 20 to 30 questions a buyer asks before choosing you.
"Best crypto wallet for staking"
"Is [your brand] legit?"
"[Your brand] vs [competitor]"
Threads. Run each prompt in ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode and Perplexity. Log every Reddit link in the sources.
Replies. Pick the threads you can genuinely improve, then add the missing answer from a disclosed account.
Rechecks. Rerun the same prompts every month and log what moved.
The audit sheet looks like this:
Prompt
Cited Thread
Your Brand in It
What's Missing
Action
Best wallet for staking
2025 thread in a wallet subreddit
Not mentioned
Current fees compared
Reply from the official account
Is [brand] legit?
2024 complaint thread
Named, negative
Real withdrawal times
Specific reply, then follow up
[Brand] vs [rival]
2026 comparison thread
Named, mixed
Your new feature
Disclosed comment from the team
The rows are examples. Yours come from your own prompts.
How to pick threads worth joining:
Ask 3 questions: is the thread still open, does the subreddit allow brands and can you add something new?
Skip threads you can't improve. A reply that repeats your homepage does more harm than silence.
Start a thread only when none exists, and only where the rules allow it.
Fix the product first when the complaint is fair. No reply outruns a real problem.
What Does Authentic Participation Look Like on Reddit?
Authentic participation means a real person, a disclosed connection and an answer that would still help if your brand weren't in it. Reddit and regulators both punish the alternatives.
Do:
Post as yourself. Use an official account, or tag commercial posts with Reddit's brand affiliate tag.
Bring specifics: fees, timelines, numbers and links to docs.
Take the hard questions, especially withdrawals, security and fees.
Read each subreddit's rules first. Many ban self-promotion outright.
Put builders in AMAs. People trust the engineer more than the marketer.
Don't:
Buy upvotes or run vote rings. Reddit's rules ban vote manipulation by any means.
Pose as a customer. The FTC's fake reviews rule, in force since October 21, 2024, bans fake reviews and undisclosed insider reviews, with fines up to $51,744 per violation.
Run AI personas. When researchers ran a secret AI-bot experiment on r/changemyview in 2025, Reddit's top lawyer called it improper and highly unethical and sent formal legal demands.
Drop links and leave. Accounts that only post brand links get flagged as spam.
That's the only way we run Reddit for clients: real, disclosed accounts inside a wider community programme. Our comparison of Reddit marketing agencies shows how to vet anyone you hire for it.
How Do You Measure Reddit's Effect on AI Answers?
Measure it with a fixed prompt panel: the same buying questions, on the same engines, every month, logged the same way. That's step 4 of the Citation Trail, and it's where most teams stop too early.
Track every month:
Answer share: how many of your prompts mention your brand, per engine.
Reddit share: how many of the cited sources are Reddit threads.
Thread tone: positive, mixed or negative, for each thread that names you.
Replies that stuck: which of your replies now sit in cited threads.
Watch downstream:
Referral visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and reddit.com.
Branded search volume.
Thread language turning up in sales calls and support tickets.
Keep the read honest:
Expect noise. 1 retrieval change moved ChatGPT's Reddit share by 86% in under 2 weeks.
Read engines separately. ChatGPT can drop a thread while AI Overviews keeps it.
Credit carefully. A new mention may come from your reply or from something else entirely.
Start simple. Trackers such as Ahrefs Brand Radar, Semrush, Profound and Peec AI automate parts of this, but a spreadsheet works for the first 3 months.
The Risks of Chasing Reddit Citations
The 2 biggest risks are getting caught faking it and building a plan on 1 engine's habits.
Bans: subreddits and Reddit itself remove accounts that spam or game votes.
Exposure: a discovered fake account becomes the top comment, and AI can cite that too.
Legal: fake or undisclosed insider reviews can breach the FTC rule.
Volatility: ChatGPT's use of Reddit has collapsed twice in a year, in September 2025 and August 2026.
Data access: tools that read Reddit through its free API need another route by March 2027.
Old threads: a 2-year-old complaint can keep feeding answers long after you fixed the problem.

We've run 600+ campaigns across 100+ projects since 2023, including work with 200+ partner communities for Anichess.
Yes, though less visibly since August 2026. Reddit was among ChatGPT's most-cited sources until a change in how ChatGPT searches cut its share of citations from 3.8% to 0.5%. ChatGPT still cites Reddit, and Semrush suggests it may now shape answers earlier in the process, without a visible link.
Does Google AI Overviews use Reddit?
Yes. Reddit ranked 2nd among top-cited sources in AI Overviews in Ahrefs data for July 2026, and Google licenses Reddit content under a deal signed in February 2024. Its share fell only 11% during ChatGPT's August drop.
Why did ChatGPT stop citing Reddit as much?
The leading explanation is a change on August 8, 2026, when ChatGPT Search started running far more searches limited to specific sites. Those favour official pages over forums. OpenAI hasn't confirmed the cause and says it doesn't set fixed visibility for any site.
Why is Reddit shutting its free API and RSS feeds?
Reddit says RSS had become a route for large-scale scraping and automated abuse. New public API requests stop on October 31, 2026, RSS ends on November 13 and the rest of the public API closes in March 2027. Google and OpenAI license Reddit data under separate deals.
Can brands post on Reddit to get cited by AI?
Yes, if they post as themselves and add something useful. Use an official or disclosed account, follow each subreddit's rules and answer the questions buyers actually ask. Fake accounts and bought upvotes break Reddit's rules and can breach the FTC's fake reviews rule.
Which Reddit threads does AI cite most?
Threads that rank on Google's first page and hold a specific, upvoted comment. In a study of 1.21 million citations, 62% of cited threads ranked on page 1, and the median cited comment had just 38 upvotes.
How do I find the Reddit threads AI cites about my brand?
Run your buying questions through ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode and Perplexity. Log every Reddit link in the sources. Repeat it monthly with the same prompts, because the cited threads change.
How long before a Reddit reply shows up in AI answers?
There's no fixed timeline. In 1 published 90-day case, a brand went from 1 to 4 of 12 tracked ChatGPT prompts, and 2 of the new appearances cited threads its team had joined. Track it with monthly rechecks rather than a deadline.
Does AP Collective run Reddit marketing?
Yes. AP Collective runs Reddit citation audits and disclosed participation as part of its SEO and AEO service and community programmes, with official accounts, AMAs and monthly prompt rechecks. Book a strategy call to start with an audit of your buying prompts.
